Miguel Ituarte was born in Getxo (Vizcaya).
He received his musical training at the higher conservatories of Bilbao, Madrid and Amsterdam, studying with Isabel Picaza, Juan Carlos Zubeldia, Almudena Cano and Jan Wijn. He became familiar with the harpsichord thanks to Anneke Uittenbosch and with the ancient Iberian organs at the International Academy of Tierra de Campos created by Francis Chapelet. Dimitri Bashkirov, Maria Joao Pires, Paul Badura-Skoda and Maria Curcio provided various teachings and advice.
He has received, among others, first prizes in the international competitions of Jaén, Ferrol and Fundación Guerrero, as well as numerous prizes for his interpretations of Spanish music (among them, Rosa Sabater, Manuel de Falla and that of the Hazen Foundation). He was also a finalist in the 1995 Santander International Competition.
In his concert programs he has frequently included some of the greatest works in the keyboard repertoire, ranging from Antonio de Cabezón to premieres of current music. The composers José María Sánchez Verdú, Zuriñe Fernández Gerenabarrena, José Zárate, Jesús Rueda and Gustavo Díaz-Jerez have dedicated pianistic works to him. He has recently worked on the recording of Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier" and has presented the complete series of Beethoven sonatas.
He has performed in recitals in European countries and with orchestras such as the Chamber of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Royal Philharmonic in London, the Gulbenkian in Lisbon and numerous orchestras in Spain and South America. In January 2000 he opened the first Cycle of Great Pianists at the Barcelona Auditorium with Iberia by Isaac Albéniz.
In the field of chamber music, he has performed with the Takaks and Ortys quartets, and the Quantum Ensemble; he is currently working with the soprano Cecilia Lavilla Berganza. As a member of the Triálogos trio (along with Manuel Guillén and Ángel Luis Quintana) he recorded the complete Beethoven piano trios for the Digital Spanish Television Channel. He has participated in the album Current Chamber Music from the Verso label, performing with accordionist Iñaki Alberdi works by Jesús Torres and Gabriel Erkoreka. The Columna Música label has released its version of Joan Guinjoan's Concerto for piano and orchestra, together with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and Ernest Martínez Izquierdo.
He has been a piano teacher at Musikene (Centro Superior de Música del País Vasco) since its creation in 2001.
