Passport of missing New York banker found in Estepona weeks after disappearance

Authorities investigate how Grant Barr’s passport ended up in the area as search efforts continue

The search for missing New York banker Grant Barr has taken a new turn after his passport was discovered in Estepona, weeks after he was last seen. Spanish authorities are now investigating how the document ended up in their possession and what it may indicate about his whereabouts.

Barr was reported missing in early February. Originally from the United States, he had been living in Estepona on the Costa del Sol before vanishing.

Local reports state that Barr’s passport was recently handed in to the authorities, though it remains unclear where it was found. Investigators are now working to determine whether he is still in Spain or if he may have left using alternative documentation.

Grant is described as having brown hair and green eyes and is of a slim build, standing around 5ft 7in tall. According to missing persons charity SOS Desaparecidos, he was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white shirt and an orange jacket.

Grant, a New York-based banker, visits the Costa del Sol regularly as he has relatives there. His father stated, "We spoke a few times, he was going through a tough time emotionally… then he spoke to his brother and that was it…"

Friends and family continue to appeal for information, distributing posters around Estepona and sharing details on social media.

His brother, James Barr, expressed gratitude for the support, saying: "My family and I are overwhelmed by the good people who have sent messages of hope and support, shared their stories with us and offered help in any way possible. Finding him will be a result of regular everyday people sharing the story with their friends, families and networks, recognising his face and contacting him directly or contacting the authorities."

The U.S. embassy in Madrid has been informed but stated it could not comment on the case due to privacy rules. Spanish authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward as the investigation continues.
