Firefighters rescue greyhound from the waters of Cartagena port
A dramatic chase ended with the dog being saved after it jumped into the sea and began swimming towards the shipyard
A tense but ultimately happy ending unfolded in the port of Cartagena early on Tuesday morning, March 18, when firefighters managed to rescue a greyhound that had escaped from its owner and thrown itself into the sea.
The incident began around 6.30am when the dog broke free in the city centre and began running through the streets, chased by several people who attempted to stop her. According to a local resident, “several boys on scooters and bicycles” joined the effort, but the agile ‘galga’ managed to stay ahead. The pursuit eventually led the frightened dog to the cruise terminal at the port, where she leapt into the water and continued her escape by swimming towards the Navantia shipyard.
Workers at the shipyard also tried unsuccessfully to catch the animal, as bystanders and the exhausted owner looked on in distress. Those present described the situation as “agonising” as the disoriented dog continued to evade capture despite multiple efforts.
Emergency services were contacted, and firefighters from Cartagena City Council quickly responded to the scene. Using a inflatable Zodiac rescue boat, they were able to reach the greyhound and bring her safely back to dry land.
“You can’t imagine how happy we all were,” said one of the witnesses, who expressed heartfelt thanks to the emergency team for their professional and compassionate response.
