Boy, 9, one of two in ICU after boat propeller accident in La Manga
The child and his aunt were seriously injured while swimming near Ensenada del Esparto
A 9-year-old boy is in a serious condition in the paediatric intensive care unit at the Virgen de La Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia after being struck by the propeller of a boat while swimming in the water of a beach in La Manga del Mar Menor.
His 37-year-old aunt, who also sustained injuries in the incident, is recovering in a stable condition in the ICU following surgery.
The accident occurred on Sunday evening, July 20, near the Mediterranean-facing Playa Ensenada del Esparto beach in La Manga. According to sources close to the investigation, the boy and his aunt were in the water when the boat, owned by the woman’s husband, unexpectedly moved.
The vessel had been anchored, but in an attempt to create some distance from a nearby boat, the owner attempted to manoeuvre it. It is believed that the reverse gear became stuck, causing the boat to suddenly shift backwards and hit the two swimmers.
Emergency services were alerted shortly after 7pm by several witnesses who saw the accident. The injured were quickly taken to the port of Tomás Maestre, where they were met by medical teams.
Civil Protection officers from the San Javier Town Council, Local Police, and a Mobile Emergency Unit with staff from the 061 Regional Emergency and Health Services were deployed to the scene.
The child suffered deep cuts to both legs and required emergency surgery. The woman sustained a serious injury to her thigh. Both were transferred to the Virgen de La Arrixaca hospital in Murcia, where they remain under medical care.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
