ARCHIVED - Work begins on final stretch of new inland Murcia-Valencia motorway
The new route will shorten the road journey to Valencia by almost 50 kilometres
After many years the project to create an alternative motorway route between the cities of Murcia and Valencia, following an inland route rather than the Mediterranean coast, is nearing completion and last Thursday work began on the construction of the final stretch of the A-33 road between Yecla and Caudete.
The 16 kilometres of road are budgeted to cost almost 89 million euros and will run between the RM-424 in Yecla and the N-344 in Caudete, which is in the province of Albacete. This will be a continuation of the road which in the Region of Murcia already runs from the A-30near Cieza to Jumilla and Yecla, the latter part having been open for two years, and will link to another stretch already under construction between Caudete and the Madrid. Alicante motorway.
When this route is complete it will reduce the motorway journey between Murcia and Valencia by 46 kilometres to 212 km, and cut journey times by an estimated 25 minutes, helping to alleviate congestion on the “Autovía del Mediterráneo” motorway which runs along the coast.
