ARCHIVED - Two men charged with 24 burglaries in Los Urrutias
Investigations began in the summer after a rush of thefts at unoccupied properties
Two young men have been arrested by the Guardia Civil following an investigation into numerous burglaries in Los Urrutias, on the coast of the Mar Menor in the municipality of Cartagena and are accused of being responsible for at least 24 such crimes.
The investigation began during the summer when various unoccupied homes were broken into and it was found that the tactics used by the burglars were the same in all cases. The properties targeted were holiday homes or second homes and the thieves gained entry by forcing doors and windows or by climbing onto balconies where necessary.
Once inside they removed TV screens, other electronic goods and household objects which were easy to transport, including taps and pipes which they then sold on to scrap metal dealers and recycling businesses in the area. However, various clues were found which enabled the investigating officers to identify and trace the two men, who are both aged 22 and have previous police records, and the case is now in the hands of the courts of Cartagena.
