ARCHIVED - TUI plans holidays for Mallorca, Canary Islands and Spanish mainland as Spain re-opens
The German tour operator sold 19 billion euros of holidays in 2019, operating in more than 100 countries
On Saturday Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the country would be re-opening for foreign tourism in July, and on Monday this was followed by news that the country would be removing the 14 day quarantine requirement which is currently in place on 1st July.
At the moment Spanish borders are closed other than for essential travel or repatriation of Spanish residents, but as the Covid crisis eases, confidence is growing that there will be a “summer tourist season” in Spain after all.
TUI CEO Fritz Joussen welcomed the announcement made by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez that tourism in Spain would be possible again from July:
“Now we can plan holidays for Majorca, the Spanish mainland and the Canary Islands and make our customers an offer. Millions of holidaymakers have the certainty that summer holidays in Spain are possible during school holidays. This is a good signal for many families, but also for TUI as a tour operator and the travel agencies that advise customers on their holiday decisions. After Greece, Cyprus, Croatia and Bulgaria, Spain has now also provided clarity for the start of the holiday season.
We have been preparing intensively for weeks, have developed higher safety and hygiene standards for TUI and our partners and are already training the staff in the hotels. In times of Corona, we want to make holidays as normal as possible and as responsible as necessary, during the flight, in the hotel and at the holiday destination.”
The TUI group comprises more than 400 hotels and resorts with premium brands such as RIU, TUI Blue and Robinson and also includes 18 cruise ships ranging from the MS Europa and MS Europa 2 luxury class vessels and expedition ships to the Mein Schiff fleet of TUI Cruises and the vessels of Marella Cruises in the UK. The Group also includes leading European tour operator brands, five airlines with 150 modern medium- and long-haul aircraft and 1,600 travel agencies.
