ARCHIVED - The Virgen de la Fuensanta comes to the city of Murcia for Easter on 5th March
A romería from the mountain sanctuary in Algezares as the patron of Murcia is brought to the cathedral
The figure of the Virgen de la Fuensanta, the patron of the city of Murcia, has been undergoing restoration over the winter but the work will be completed in time for her to be returned to her sanctuary in the mountains to the south of the regional capital on 28th February, it has been confirmed.
The delivery will be accompanied by an official ceremony at the sanctuary at 17.30, but only a few days later on 5th March “La Morenica” will be brought down in a “romería” from her sanctuary in the mountains of Algezares to the Cathedral prior to the celebrations of Semana Santa or Easter Week in early April.
This romería follows a 7-kilometre route into the city centre and crowds of people join for all or part of the way: it’s a far quieter event than when she returns to the mountains and it is easy to park by the sanctuary and accompany her down into the city, the only challenge getting back up the hill afterwards to pick up the car!
It's also fun to be in the city as she arrives, the atmosphere festive and thousands of people packing the streets.
The event is a precursor to the Easter and Semana de Primavera celebrations in the regional capital and begins this year at 14.30. Roads in the southern half of the city will be cordoned off as the procession makes its way to the Iglesia del Carmen next to the Jardín de Floridablanca at approximately 19.00. Here she will be officially welcomed before she crosses the River Segura on her way to the cathedral – this is the best spot at which to watch the procession - and La Fuensanta will then remain in the city until well after the end of the Semana de Primavera.
This is one of the two annual visits by the Virgen de la Fuensanta to the Cathedral in Murcia, the other being in September to coincide with her feast day.
