ARCHIVED - The official British population in Murcia and Spain increases
The Murcia figure stands at over 14,000 after a 4 per cent increase
The central statistics unit of the Spanish government published its definitive summary of the 8,131 local “padrón” population registers across the country on Thursday morning, revealing that the number of UK nationals officially resident in Spain on 1st January 2019 was higher than 12 months previously both in the Region of Murcia and in the country as a whole.
In Murcia the figure rose from 13,549 to 14,146 during 2018, an increase of 4.4 per cent, while in the whole of Spain there were reported to be just over 250,000 Britons (as opposed to 242,832 in 2018).
There was a lot of speculation that as Brexit approached the number of British expats in Spain and other EU nations would fall, but it appears that at least until a year ago the opposite was the case.
However, it is quite possible that the rise in the number of UK nationals registered on the padrón is due not to new Brits arriving, but to those who were already here on an unofficial basis having at last got round to officially registering their residency in order to protect their rights after Brexit.
Looking back over the historical sequence for the number of UK nationals in the Region of Murcia it can be seen that the figure is now considerably lower than the peak of 23,556 which was reached in 2012. However, that total was probably inflated unrealistically by people registering on the padrón when buying property and then failing to un-register afterwards.
On the other hand, when figures were first published in 1998 it was reported that only 535 Britons lived in Murcia.
The figures for Spain as a whole follow a similar pattern: in 2011 a peak of 391,000 was reached, while back in 1998 the total stood at a mere 75,600. In the intervening years the proportion of UK nationals in Spain who live in the Region of Murcia has increased from just 0.7 per cent to 5.65 per cent.
