Surprising little Alicante town voted most beautiful by National Geographic
Some familiar names also made the list, including Altea, Xàbia and Guadalest
Tucked away in the interior of Alicante lies a small town that has captured the hearts of travellers and locals alike. Biar, a municipality with a population of just 4,000, has been voted as one of the most beautiful towns in the province of Alicante by National Geographic.
Located 45 kilometres northwest of Alicante city, Biar is a treasure trove of historical architecture and stunning natural surroundings. Perched at an altitude of 700 metres, this Alto Vinalopó town offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Its mediaeval history is palpable in its cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses and picturesque squares.
According to National Geographic, Biar's crowning glory is its 12th-century castle, a majestic fortress that dominates the landscape. Declared a National Monument in 1931, the castle is an excellent example of Muslim and Christian defensive architecture. From its towers, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the old town and the surrounding mountains.
The centre of Biar offers a step back into history, with its Gothic-Renaissance Church of the Assumption, fountains, arches and buildings that tell stories of times gone by. The town's rich cultural heritage is evident in every corner, making it an ideal destination for heritage and culture lovers.
Surrounded by mountains, Biar offers hiking trails and walks through natural areas that invite visitors to disconnect and enjoy the tranquillity. The proximity to the Sierra de Mariola natural park makes it an attractive spot for nature enthusiasts too.
National Geographic's list of the most beautiful towns in Alicante includes some familiar names, such as Altea, Xàbia and Guadalest, as well as the island of Tabarca.
However, Biar is the surprise addition to the list this year, and for very good reason.
