ARCHIVED - Spain surpasses 5 million infections: Covid update October 25
More than 88% of the population has now been double jabbed in Spain
As the first cases of the new Delta Plus Covid variant were diagnosed in Spain over the weekend, the latest data regarding the evolution of the pandemic released by the Ministry of Health on Monday October 25 paint a rather unstable picture, with some indicators, such as the incidence rate going up, while others continue their downward trend.
While only five cases of the new Covid strain, believed to be up to 15% more transmissible than the original Delta virus, have so far been indentified in Catalonia, the experts have warned that the figure is likely to be far higher. The UK is already on high alert for this contagion, while cases have also been diagnosed in Russia, Israel and the United States.
Covid infections
On Monday, 4,485 new cases of Covid were registered, 496 of which were diagnosed in the previous 24 hours. This figure is lower than the 4,492 positives reported on the same day last week but brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 5,002,217.
Between October 15 and 21, the autonomous communities have carried out 569,617 diagnostic tests and the positivity rate now stands at 2.44%, down from 2.23% on Friday.
Over the past two weeks, a total of 22,009 positive cases have been registered.
Cumulative incidence rate
As has been the trend over the last week or so the cumulative incidence rate has continued to creep up over the weekend. The 14-day figure now sits at 46.38 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 44.49 on Friday.
The situation has taken quite a u-turn, however, as those aged between the ages of 12 and 19, recently the worst affected by the fifth wave, now have the lowest 14-day rate across all the age groups, at 28.52 cases. On the opposite end, people under the age of 11 in Spain, who are not currently being vaccinated against Covid, now have the highest rate, at 58.36.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 1,799 patients hospitalised throughout Spain with coronavirus (up slightly from 1,730 on Friday) with 437 being treated in the ICU for more serious symptoms (435 on Friday).
In the past 24 hours alone, 180 people have been admitted to hospital and 90 people were discharged.
Sadly, 54 new deaths have been reported in Spain, compared to 56 last Monday, bringing the total death toll to 87,186.
Vaccination data
On Monday, some 37,234,272 people, representing 88.4% of the population have been double jabbed while 90.2% have by now received at least one dose (37,979,234).
