ARCHIVED - Social Services in Murcia city sent more than 23,000 people to the Food Bank in 2020
More than a million kilos of food has been distributed free to those in need across Murcia city alone
The municipality of Murcia city distributed more than 1,125,998 kilos of food products to those in need during 2020, the pandemic exacerbating the problems faced by those at the lower end of the pay scale.
During 2020, Servicios Sociales (social services SEMAS) in the city of Murcia helped a total of 23,784 people, of whom around 3,500 were underage, giving them access to food banks to receive help in the form of food products and other basic necessities.
In total, 1,125,998 kilos of food products were distributed from different organizations and associations across the municipality of Murcia.
During the first part of the pandemic, the Food Bank gave the food products in bulk to SEMAS, who collaborated with other entities, including Civil Protection and charities, to provide regular food packages to families who were confined due to Covid-19 and had no other support or financial resources;
around 440 families in total.
Last year the council recognised the increased need for support and added an additional subsidy of 20,000 euros to two other extraordinary financial aids set-up in response to the pandemic, reaching a total of 471,347 euros, buying food and basic necessities for around 6,917 families.
Furthermore, there is still an active food campaign to collect around 200,000 kilos of food to donate to those in need, and the campaign also offers the possibility to make an online purchase at the virtual solidarity market for anyone wishing to support the food bank programme (www.basmur.org).
Contributions can also be made via Bizum (with the code 00922).
