ARCHIVED - Six cases of the California Covid-19 variant detected in Spain
The Spanish health authorities are currently monitoring 10 variants of the Covid virus.
Six cases of the California variant of coronavirus, called “el diablo” (the devil) by the Spanish media, have been detected in Spain, the Ministry of Health has confirmed.
The Spanish ministry is currently keeping a careful eye on 10 variants after adding three new variants to its list: one from New York, one that began in Uganda and another that has been spreading in Portugal since November. However, no cases of these three have yet been detected in Spain.
The California variant, known by scientists as B.1.429, is known for increased transmissibility and the experts think it is the reason the state has become the epicentre of the pandemic in the US.
Researchers have said the variant is 40% better at infecting cells, creates a higher risk of death and lowers the antibody count provided by vaccines or previous infections.
Although there is more research to be done into the variant, it could render vaccines marginally less effective, although it is believed that they will still be sufficiently powerful to prevent serious illness.
The latest report on variants in Spain, which included the new additions to the ‘variants to watch’ list, has also warned that although there have so far only been 54 confirmed cases of the South African variant in Spain, more may be seen in the coming weeks as has occurred in nearby countries. The South African, British and Brazilian variants are those which most concern the Ministry of Health at this time, although it is also watching the variants from Rio de Janeiro, California, and Nigeria, of which there have been 14, 6 and 1 cases respectively.
For more info see: Confirmed cases of Brazilian variant rise to 17.
The British or “Kent” variation is now believed to account for anywhere between 10 and 70 per cent of all cases now diagnosed in Spain, depending on the region concerned. Yesterday Navarra confirmed that 60 per cent of all cases detected in the region now relate to this strain and in Madrid the regional health service has stated this week that up to 80 per cent of cases in some districts are of the Kent variant.
