ARCHIVED - Sierra Nevada registers more than 36,000 skiers over Easter week
Andalusian residents can go to Sierra Nevada as long as they come from towns with fewer than 500 Covid cases per 100,000 residents and have bought a ski pass online in advance.
The Sierra Nevada ski resort in the Andalusian province of Granada received more than 36,000 visitors between 27 March and 4 April, including 33,000 skiers and 3,200 cable car and activity users, the resort management has reported.
Although a surprisingly high figure considering that Andalusian provincial and regional borders were closed over the Easter holiday period, the number of visitors was one of the lowest since records began at the resort, apart from Easter 2020 when it was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Average hotel occupancy was just 34 per cent, and there was an average of 72 kilometres of slopes open, according to Cetursa, the public company that manages the resort. The slopes were, however, closed due to strong winds on Tuesday and Thursday, and a strike was called for Saturday but failed to affect activity.
The forecasts for this coming week are of 32 kilometres of open slopes and seven ski lifts, with typical spring snow.
Although borders remain closed at present, Andalusian residents from towns with fewer than 500 Covid cases per 100,000 inhabitants may travel to Sierra Nevada as long as they purchase a ski pass via the resort’s website before they travel.
