Second garden waste fire in Camposol in a week highlights ongoing refuse crisis
Locals are on high alert after the second fire in one of the urbanisation’s green waste areas in less than a week
A second fire in less than a week has broken out in the Camposol urbanisation, again linked to the unchecked accumulation of plant waste and debris.
The blaze erupted late last night, Saturday July 12, in Sector D, where one of several waste disposal points set up by the Town Hall has been left untended for more than a year.
The fire, visible from multiple parts of the urbanisation due to the height of the flames, caused alarm among residents who feared for their safety and property.
The proximity of these unofficial dumps to homes has long been a point of contention, and last night’s events have further fuelled residents’ concerns.
Fire crews responded swiftly, but their efforts were hindered by two key issues: a lack of lighting due to a power outage affecting the main avenue and surrounding streets, and strong winds that intensified the blaze.
The flames were finally brought under control at around 3.20am on Sunday morning. Thankfully, no injuries or property damage were reported.
Residents from all four sectors of Camposol say they have repeatedly warned about the dangers posed by unattended garden waste and dried vegetation, not to mention discarded items such as mattresses and furniture.
In addition to fire risks, the waste has become a breeding ground for rats and insects, with bad smells making life unpleasant for nearby households.
“If it catches fire in Sector A or B, they’ll have to evacuate us because half of Camposol will burn down,” one local resident said.
Only days earlier, another fire scorched roughly 1,300 square metres of brush and garden debris on Sector C. Following that incident, authorities reminded the public that dumping rubble and waste in unauthorised locations is a serious environmental offence.
Back in May, the Town Council unanimously passed a motion calling for the urgent cleaning of these high-risk areas and the establishment of a clear action timetable, but there has as yet been no visible progress since the motion was approved.
With temperatures rising and the summer dry season underway, neighbours are calling for immediate and decisive action before another fire breaks out, one that could have far more devastating consequences.
