Important work is underway in San Javier to increase the capacity of the wastewater treatment plant, to allow it to better capture the flow of rainwater when it pours down and which put the town’s sewage system to the test.

The aim of the expansion project is to avoid flooding in the town every time it rains, a problem that is particularly persistent in San Javier and other municipalities surrounding the Mar Menor, such as Los Alcázares.

San Javier Town Council has stated that the work should be completed “during the second half of 2023” and when finished will “multiply the capacity of the treatment plant to absorb rainwater fourfold”.

Specifically, the current capacity of the tank – 10,000 cubic metres – will be increased to 44,000 cubic metres, and any water held in the tank can be recycled as clean farm irrigation water.

“With this work we ensure that on days of heavy rainfall the first water, the most polluted, is stored in the tank for subsequent treatment and purification in the facilities and, once treated and regenerated, made available to irrigators.”
