ARCHIVED - Renfe launches four daily high-speed train services between Murcia and Madrid
Two of the new routes will include stops in Alicante, Elche and Orihuela stations
Right in time for the festive season, Renfe plans to launch four new daily high-speed train trips between Murcia and Madrid, two of which will travel through Alicante, from Tuesday December 20. So if you fancy a spot of Christmas shopping in the capital, the direct AVE rail service will get you from Murcia’s Estación del Carmen to Madrid’s Chamartín station in just 2 hours and 40 minutes.
Passengers who opt for the services that run through the Valencian Community will have the option of stopping at Orihuela, Elche and Alicante, and the overall journey to the Spanish capital will take around 3 and a half hours.
Tickets for the four new runs haven’t actually gone on sale yet so the exact schedule isn’t set in stone, but the timetable is likely to look as follows:
- Two direct trains from Murcia to Madrid, departing at 6.30am and 2pm.
- Train departing from Murcia at 11.50am, arriving in Orihuela-Miguel Hernández at 12.06pm; Elche at 12.20pm; Alicante at 12.41pm; and finally pulling into Madrid at 3.18pm.
- The second indirect AVE will leave Murcia at 7.30pm and arrive in Chamartín station in Madrid at 10.53pm. Along the way, the train will stop in Orihuela at 7.46pm, Elche at 8pm and Alicante at 8.20pm.
Running in the opposite direction, only the schedules for the indirect trains have been released:
- The first service will leave Madrid at 6.30am and arrive in Murcia at 9.55am, with stops along the way in Alicante (9.01am), Elche (9.23am) and Orihuela (9.38am).
- The second train will depart from Madrid at 2.25 in the afternoon, stopping off in Alicante at 4.56pm, arriving in Elche at 5.18pm, stopping in Orihuela at 5.33 pm and ending its journey in El Carmen at 5.50pm.
Prices for these services have yet to be released.
Offering yet more flexibility to travellers, Renfe will begin operating a new Cercanías service between Murcia and Alicante using electric trains. Eight of these high-speed services will make the journey in just 52 minutes between Monday and Friday (six on weekends).
The electric trains will depart Estación del Carmen at 6.40am, 10.10am, 12.45pm, 3pm, 4.50pm, 7.50pm and 9.20pm. The returning trains will depart from Alicante at 7am, 8.40am, 10.10am, 12.50pm, 3.15pm, 5.15pm, 7.55pm and 9.55pm.
All of these journeys will include stops at the Beniel railway station.
