ARCHIVED - Rain alert downgraded to yellow as the gota fría storm eases off in Murcia
Strong winds blow away the clouds after flooding in the Mar Menor area
The State meteorological agency Aemet has reviewed the latest developments regarding the isolated high altitude depression which brought a “gota fría” storm and consequent flooding to coastal areas of the Region of Murcia on Monday night, and has downgraded the alert for the possibility of further heavy rain from orange to yellow in the Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón.
There is still an orange alert in place throughout Tuesday along the Mediterranean coastline of Murcia between Cabo de Palos and Mazarrón for Force 7 or 8 winds and waves of up to 4 metres, but the downgrading of the rain alert reflects the fact that there is now estimated to be a probability of between 40 and 70 per cent of 20 millimetres of rain in an hour in the Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón. That represents a heavy shower but is far less significant than the 100 millimetres or more which fell in Los Alcázares during the night!
The situation is expected to last all day, while in the south-west and central areas of the Region an alert for the possibility of 15 millimetres of rain in an hour or 60 mm in 12 hours was lifted at 12.00.
As the rain moves away from Murcia, though, the wind is becoming stronger and yellow alerts are in place until 18.00 for gusts of up to 70 km/h in the Altiplano (Yecla and Jumilla) and 80 km/h in the Campo de Cartagena, Mazarrón and the south-west.
