ARCHIVED - Police officers in Valencia save 2-month-old baby after 20 minutes of resuscitation
Persistence pays off for hero policemen who refused to give up on lifeless infant
Officers of the Policía Nacional in Valencia are being hailed as heroes after they successfully saved the life of a 2-month-old baby in the Ruzafa district of the city on Sunday, applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques for 20 minutes before the infant started breathing again.
The incident occurred at around 19.30 in the evening when the parents of the baby reported that he had stopped breathing and the officers on patrol rushed to their home. On arrival they found a number of people surrounding the mother, holding the apparently lifeless child, and while one officer immediately began to carry out chest massage the other contacted emergency medical services to coordinate the rescue attempt.
Eventually the baby reacted and started crying, but almost immediately stopped breathing again: however, the officer concerned refused to give up and continued his treatment until a doctor and ambulance arrived, and as a result of his efforts by the time the infant reached hospital he was fully conscious.
