ARCHIVED - Pfizer will reduce deliveries of Covid vaccine to Europe from next week
Spain is currently receiving around 350,000 doses a week and this will now be cut
All around the world there is a scramble to obtain further supplies of coronavirus vaccines, and in Europe several countries have been criticised for the slow roll-out of their vaccination campaigns, much of the delay being blamed for lack of available vaccines and logistical teething problems in handling and administering the first doses to more vulnerable patients.
Pharmaceutical company Pfizer has now said that it will temporarily reduce deliveries to Europe of its vaccine against Covid-19 starting from next week, in order to increase production capacity from 1,300 to 2,000 million doses a year, exacerbating the complaints from anxious members of the public wanting to know when they themselves will be vaccinated.
The original report making this claim was published by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI), and has subsequently been verified by Pfizer.
"Although this will temporarily affect shipments from the end of January to the beginning of February, it will provide a significant increase in the doses available to patients in late February and March," the company said in a statement.
Pfizer has reported that these changes to the process and facilities to increase the volume of dose production "will require additional regulatory approvals", although it has not specified which ones.
The Norwegian report detailed that "this temporary reduction will affect all European countries."
Using the data provided by the Norwegian Government around which to illustrate the reduction, Norway will receive 36,075 doses next week, instead of the original 43,875 scheduled, that is, 17.78 percent less.
At the moment, Spain is receiving around 350,000 doses from Pfizer every Monday, according to the Ministry of Health. If a reduction in shipments similar to that reported by Norway is applied, Spain would receive 62,230 fewer weekly doses, that is, 287,770. According to the data provided by Norway, "it is still not clear how long it will take for Pfizer to reach its maximum production capacity again."
