ARCHIVED - Outbreaks are under control and Mazarrón will not be confined says regional Government
42 further cases on Monday brings the total of active cases to 721.
The Covid Monitoring Commission has decided that the outbreaks are not affecting the tourist sector.
In spite of having the same number of cases as Totana when the decision was taken to confine the municipality nearly two weeks ago, Mazarrón will not be confined for the moment.
The Covid Monitoring Commission met on Monday morning to analyse the situation of the Murcia Region and decided not to impose a confinement on Mazarrón following another sudden spike in cases reported on Sunday.
The Minister of Health, Manuel Villegas, acknowledged that the regional Government is “concerned” about the outbreak at the Susaña agricultural company, which now accounts for 47 cases, but has decided against the confinement of the whole municipality because the cases "are not affecting the tourist area or anything to do with tourism" and the outbreak is “contained”.
The Government will, however, set up a “covid monitoring point” in the municipality to assist those concerned that they may be infected and to ensure testing is available for anyone who may be related to the outbreak in some way and this afternoon, technicians from the Ministry of Health will meet with the Mayor of Mazarrón to discuss containment measures for employees of the company as well as visiting the infected in their homes to ensure that they are fully aware of their responsibility to quarantine for 14 days.
It has been reported that some of the employees continued to work after showing Covid symptoms, thereby infecting their co-workers.
The number of cases in the Region increased by a further 42 on Monday, taking the active total up to 721. Seven of the new cases relate to Murcia city, 16 to Totana, 4 to Mazarrón, and 5 to Lorca, the remainder scattered around the region.
657 of these patients are in home isolation, and 64 hospitalised, 2 of them in intensive care.
Call for responsibility from the under 18’s
The regional Minister for Health, Manuel Villegas, also called today for a responsible attitude from young people, due to the fact that 15% of the new cases diagnosed in the region are amongst young people under the age of 18.The cases are largely mild or asymptomatic, but can easily be transmitted to older members of the family though domestic contacts: ”It is fundamental for them to understand that the security of their families lies in their hands,” he said.
