Oral antiseptic withdrawn from the market in Spain

The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has ordered the immediate withdrawal of the drug Co-Bucal, an oral antiseptic, from the market in Spain. Several batches of the medication were found to contain excessive amounts of thymol, an organic substance with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Pharmacies have been asked to remove 150ml bottles of Co-Bucal (NR: 51383, CN: 732453) in batches 220001, 220002 and 220003, all with an expiration date of March 31, 2027.

AEMPS has reassured patients that although the medication has been recalled, its use doesn’t pose any particular health risk.

The drug is an antiseptic specially formulated for the treatment of oral problems such as alveolar fistulas, pyorrheic states, gum hypertrophy, stomatitis, simple and ulcerative gingivitis, inflammation of tonsils and salivary glands, glossitis and phlegmonous processes.

Thymol is a substance present in the essential oils of thyme or oregano, although it can also be created synthetically in a laboratory. It’s mostly used as a disinfectant and fungicide but its often also included in mouthwash and toothpaste thanks to its pleasant flavour.
