ARCHIVED - New wave of Algerian migrants crossing the Mediterranean to Murcia
Over 300 unauthorized migrants stretch internment centre capacity to the limit
2019 came to an end with there having been fewer unauthorized migrants intercepted along the coast of Murcia as they attempted to cross the Mediterranean from Africa into EU territory, but the settled weather in the new year has brought a flood of arrivals to the Costa Cálida over the last week.
It was reported in the regional press that by 27th December the number of migrants apprehended either off the coast of Murcia or after they reached land in the Costa Cálida during 2019 had reached 1,475, representing a decrease of 14 per cent in comparison with the year before, but the arrival of 2020 saw a wave of small boats heading for the south-east of Spain.
By 6th January 24 of them had been intercepted with a total of 318 people on board, all of them Algerians, and the temporary internment centres in the Region were once again barely able to cater for such large numbers. Among the new arrivals were at least 14 women and 21 minors, and although the authorities stressed that none of them were allowed to walk free the resources were stretched to their limit as various of them were distributed to immigrant internment establishments in different parts of Spain.
The sudden increase in the number of people making the crossing is attributed in part to the calm conditions which have prevailed at sea over the last week or more, and with the weather forecast to remain stable for the next few days further interceptions are considered probable.
