New pilgrimage and walking route from Guadix to Caravaca de la Cruz presented as the Holy Jubilee year in Caravaca approaches
The 322-kilometre route runs from close to Granada to the holy city of Caravaca
As the start of the 2024 Holy Jubilee year in Caravaca de la Cruz nears, a new route for walkers and pilgrims has been unveiled covering a distance of 322 kilometres as it winds its way among the mountains and through the countryside between Guadiz, near the city of Granada, and the destination in Caravaca.
The “Camino Espiritual del Sur” runs through 17 municipalities, 15 of them in the province of Granada and Moratalla and Caravaca in the Region of Murcia, and the website of the route suggests that it should be tackled in 14 stages of approximately 25 kilometres each. An agreement to promote and maintain the route was signed on September 15 by al lof the Town Halls involved at an event in Huéscar, and the Mayor of Caravaca de la Cruz, José Francisco García, thanked all those present for their commitment and cooperation in joining the initiative.
The 15 municipalities in Granada which are taking part are Guadix, Benalúa de Guadix, Fonelas, Villanueva de las Torres, Gorafe, Bácor-Olivar, Freila, Baza, Zújar, Benamaurel, Cúllar, Orce, Galera, Huéscar and Puebla de Don Fadrique.
The starting point of the Camino Espiritual del Sur is the seat of the Diocese of Guadix, one of the oldest in Spain, having been created, according to some sources, by San Torcuato in the 1st century AD.
