ARCHIVED - New law aims to station more police officers in Andalusian towns
Every town with more than 5,000 residents in the Spanish region of Andalusia will have a Local Police force of its own with at least five officers.
The Andalusian government has agreed to start processing a new preliminary draft bill to update the current law ruling Local Police forces in the region, which has become obsolete.
Under the new regulations, every town with more than 5,000 residents will have its own Local Police force, and all forces will consist of at least five officers. The draft bill also allows for small municipalities that lack funds to join forces with their neighbours and share the costs in order to protect the smaller, more vulnerable communities and increase public safety.
Other improvements to the previous law (which has been in force for more than 20 years) include promoting gender equality and women’s rights.
New officers will also receive specific training in fields that have become important such as equality, gender violence, school absenteeism, road safety education and mediation techniques.
