ARCHIVED - New cases increase in Andalusia although the situation has improved since last week; Covid update March 5
Although 50 people died in the 24 hours before the latest report, the provinces of Almería and Jaen did not record any deaths over the period.
Andalusia has seen 1,270 new cases of coronavirus and 50 deaths in 24 hours according to the latest report from the Andalusian Statistics and Cartography Institute (IECA) released on Friday (5 March).
This was the first time the region had reported more than 1,000 new cases since Saturday, as there were 940 on Sunday, 610 on Monday, 359 on Tuesday, 474 on Wednesday, and 985 on Thursday. It was also higher than on Friday last week when there were 1,197.
Seville is once again the province to report the most new cases, 281, followed by Málaga with 254 and Granada with 212. The other five Andalusian provinces reported fewer than 200 new cases each: 183 in Cádiz, 143 in Almería, 112 in Córdoba, 61 in Jaen and 24 in Huelva.
The number of deaths from Covid-19 reported on Friday, 50, was also up from the day before when there were 41, and Friday last week when there were 33. The only day this week that saw more deaths in 24 hours was Wednesday when 69 were reported.
By province, Cádiz has registered the most deaths, 15, followed by Málaga, Seville and Granada, nine each, Córdoba five, and Huelva three. No deaths were reported in Almería or Jaen.
The 14-day accumulated incidence rate for the region has dropped to 130.9 cases per 100,000 residents, down 3.9 points from Thursday’s report and down 65.6 from the 196.5 per 100,000 last Friday.
There are currently 1,502 coronavirus patients in Andalusian hospitals, 123 fewer than on Thursday and 483 fewer than on Friday last week. 354 of them are on ICUs, down 37 from Thursday and down 127 from last Friday.
Health Ministry data shows that Andalusia has registered 479,176 positive cases of coronavirus and 8,630 deaths since the pandemic began. Altogether 38,412 people have been admitted to hospitals across the region with the virus, and 3,876 of them spent time in ICUs. However, 334,857 people who had tested positive are now fully recovered, according to the authorities.
The regional authorities have announced this week that restrictions on movement will remain in place from 5 March until midnight on 19 March 2021 in order to reduce the spread of Covid-19.
The measures extended across the entire region include perimeter closures of the region as a whole and of each of its eight provinces, and the night-time curfew between 10 pm and 6 am.
