ARCHIVED - Murcia government activates coronavirus protocol
Patients who present symptoms and have visited China recently will be admitted to the Arrixaca hospital
In response to the growing concern in Spain regarding the possible spread of the coronavirus which has led to ten million people being confined to their homes in the Chinese city of Wuhan, the government of Murcia has announced that any patient in the Region who is identified by doctors as having a possibility of infection will be treated and monitored at the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in El Palmar.
This protocol is similar to the one which was activated during the ebola scare in 2014, and what it means in simple terms is that at all health centres in the Region of Murcia, if any patient presents symptoms similar to those of coronavirus – initially similar to those of flu – and has been in the areas of China affected by the virus, he or she will automatically be transferred to the Arrixaca. Once in the largest hospital in the Region the patient will be isolated while further tests are carried out to confirm or rule out the presence of the virus, as happened with an Icelandic woman in Torrevieja earlier this week (the tests soon proved negative).
In announcing the activation of the protocol Manuel Villegas, the minister for Health in the Murcia government, stressed the fact that at present there is no cause for widespread alarm in Spain, adding that the country has “the best health service” to deal with situations of this kind.
Elsewhere in Europe cases of coronavirus have already been confirmed in Germany and France, and a specially chartered plane is scheduled to bring 200 French nationals in Wuhan back to Europe on Thursday before returning to pick up other EU nationals. Once in France, those returning to Europe will be placed in quarantine for 14 days, the maximum incubation period for the virus.
In the meantime, Sr Villegas that simple precautionary measures similar to those which might be adopted to ward off the flu can reduce any risk of infection, such as washing your hands frequently, or covering your face with your arm rather than your hand when sneezing.
