ARCHIVED - Murcia fruit trees in spring blossom as warm October weather misleads them
Growers in parts of Blanca and Cieza fear there will be no fruit to pick next year
The unusually warm early autumn in the Region of Murcia, where as recently as a week ago temperatures were still reaching 29 or 30 degrees in central areas for Halloween and All Saints’ Day, have led to fruit trees in Blanca and other municipalities nearby bursting into blossom as if the spring had already arrived in south-eastern Spain.
Fruit growers believe that this extraordinary autumn blossoming is due not only to the high temperatures in October, when practically every day of the month was warmer in Murcia than the historical average apart from the 21st and 22nd, but also to the dampness in the soil and sub-soil following the torrential rain brought by the gota fría storm in mid-September. This is especially the case in the Los Cabañiles area of Blanca, close to the A-30 motorway, where local farmers are worried that as the trees will now not blossom again in the spring it is unlikely that they will have any fruit to pick next year.
Similar premature blossoming has occurred in parts of Abarán, Cieza and Archena, with the trees most susceptible to this misreading of the seasons being peaches and nectarines, which normally blossom in Murcia in late January and February. However, rather colder weather now appears to be here for the winter in the Costa Cálida and the phenomenon is not expected to spread to other areas and other kinds of fruit tree.
