Murcia declared a disaster area following heavy September rains
Along with several others places, the Region of Murcia has been declared a catastrophic area and could be liable to receive funds to repair the damage

The Spanish government has declared Murcia, along with several other places in Spain, a disaster zone due to the damage caused by storms earlier this month.
Spain’s Council of Ministers agreed this Monday September 25 to declare the Region of Murcia a ‘Zone Seriously Affected by a Civil Protection Emergency’, an official designation known by its initials in Spanish as ZAEPC, or better known as a ‘catastrophe zone’.
This is as a result of the torrential rains caused by the storm of Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA) on the first weekend of September.
For the end of this month and the start of October, the weather forecast is for dry, sunny days and warm temperatures, but the heavy rainfall and storms earlier this month were devastating for many communities.
A total of 28 Spanish regions were damaged by various adverse weather phenomena and forest fires in the autonomous communities of Andalucía, Aragón, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands, Madrid and Murcia.
The DANA caused persistent, widespread and in some places extremely heavy rainfall from the early hours of September 2, causing the deaths of eight people across the country and resulting in numerous incidents in all the provinces of the autonomous communities affected.
The torrential rains also caused flooding in streets, on the ground floors of buildings and in garages, while there were also reports of landslides, occasional power cuts and problems on the railways. There was also significant damage to infrastructures and public and private property, crops and farms, industrial estates and other productive facilities.
By declaring the affected areas ‘catastrophe zones’, the Spanish government has opened the way for them to apply for aid destined to alleviate the effects of material damage to homes and belongings and to industrial, commercial and other service establishments, as well as personal injury claims.
