ARCHIVED - Mud bathing and beaches open in San Pedro del Pinatar
The famous baños de lodo can now be used
The beginning of phase 2 permits councils to re-open their beaches, although how they do so is at the discretion of each individual council.
In san Pedro del Pinatar it has been decided that the number of users in May and June is likely to remain low other than at weekends until inter-provincial movement is permitted around Spain, probably on the 22nd June, although the situation continues to evolve so rapidly that this may well change, so for this reason the council has opted not to install four metre parcels on its beaches for the moment and will instead use the Policía Local and Protección Civil to increase vigilance of its beaches, focusing on the playas of Lo Pagán, La Llana, la Torre Derribada and El Mojón.
Lifeguard cover will not be available in the municipality until 15th June when the regional Plan Copla begins as normal, so anyone choosing to bathe in the municipality does so at their own risk before that date.
This year the council is not intending to employ additional lifeguards and at the moment has opted for 42 personnel, the normal figure contracted annually.
Baños de lodo can re-open
San Pedro del Pinatar is famous for its mud-bathing facilities and although there are several other locations around the Mar Menor in which the therapeutic black muds of the Mar Menor can be dug out and applied to the skin, the facilities are the best in san Pedro del Pinatar where purpose built bathing stations have been erected, although it can be a pain to park nearby. Bathers often opt to take a bicycle and cycle down to the windmill at the far end of the walkway, and in high summer, cycling to the Baños de lodo is often preferable to trying to park anywhere near them.
Until the beginning of the bathing season only basic facilities will be available on any of the beaches.
