ARCHIVED - More than 10.7 million doses of Covid vaccines administered in Spain by Monday evening
The vaccination process against coronavirus is finally picking up in Spain, and although incidence rates are on the up following the Easter holidays, the results of vaccinations are apparent from the drop in infections among the elderly.
The Spanish regional health authorities have so far administered a total of 10,784,997 doses of coronavirus vaccines (89.9 per cent of the total amount that has been distributed), 553,172 of them over the weekend.
Moreover, 3,108,437 patients are now fully immunized, as 36,328 have received their second dose since Friday. As a result, 6.6 per cent of the country’s population is now fully inoculated, and 16.2 per cent, 7,676,560 members of the public, have had at least one dose.
The figure is still a far cry from the government’s target of 70 per cent of the population, but the process is at least starting to speed up according to Fernando Simón, the director of the Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES), who said during his presentation of the latest data that a decrease in the number of infections amongst the elderly is starting to show in the data provided by the regional health authorities.
From the beginning of the pandemic, it was clear that the elderly were at the most risk, which was why the health authorities decided to start the vaccination process with the oldest members of the public and work their way backwards. The over-90s are now fully inoculated, 91.4 per cent of those aged between 80 and 89 have had at least one dose, and 51 per cent of them have had both.
That, Sr. Simón confirmed, is apparent in the data as there has been a 40 per cent drop in incidence among the over-80s compared to those aged between 65 and 79.
