Streets were flooded and turned into gushing rivers, there were landslides, roads were cut off and there was damage to buildings and property after the rainstorms battered Murcia this Monday afternoon, June 10.
It comes after orange weather warnings were issued for the risk of storms, and just a couple of days after hail, rain and strong winds caused damage in the north of the Region.
This Monday, the Emergency Coordination Centre 112 were called out to respond to 324 issues related to the rain and storms, most of which were because the water wasn’t draining properly or because trees or other obstacles had blocked the road.
The municipality most affected was Las Torres de Cotillas with 104 emergency callouts, followed by Murcia city (98), Molina de Segura (23), Calasparra (22) and Alcantarilla (20).

At the moment there are no reports of significant personal injuries related to these events. In some cases, people rescued from their vehicles have shown signs of hypothermia but no cases have been serious so far.
Heavy rain, accompanied by hail and gusts of wind, started in the northwest where, in towns such as Calasparra and Moratalla, the streets flooded and become surging rivers.
In this area, some 60 litres of rain fell in just a couple of hours. The fire brigade had to rescue a person in Calasparra who was trapped in their car when they tried to cross a road in the area of La Daya. When they were finally rescued, they had to be taken to the Hospital Comarcal del Noroeste with hypothermia.
The storm moved down into central Murcia, bringing rain, thunder and lightning to places like Cieza, Molina de Segura and Murcia capital. Lower floor and underground garages flooded, meaning emergency services had to pump the water out into an already strained drainage system.
In the capital, several roads had to be closed, but they have almost all been reopened now.
