Kidnap plot in Benidorm: Brit woman and ex-husband arrested after alleged attack on her wealthy former partner

Police say she lured him to the house and may have plotted the attack to solve her financial troubles

A British woman has been arrested in Spain after allegedly masterminding a failed kidnap and robbery of her well-off ex-partner — a crime that police say may have been motivated by money troubles.

The woman, along with her ex-husband and another man are now at the centre of a criminal investigation near Benidorm.

It all started when officers from the Guardia Civil were called to a property in Callosa d’en Sarrià, about 25 minutes north of Benidorm, following reports of an armed break-in. A 64-year-old British man and a 56-year-old Portuguese national were caught fleeing the scene and arrested on the spot.

The Guardia Civil said: “A 64-year-old British man and a Portuguese 56-year-old are in custody. They were caught red-handed after trying to commit a violent robbery at an occupied house with the intention of unlawfully retaining the occupant.”

A search later uncovered what officers described as a stash of equipment likely intended for the crime — including two tasers, an air pistol, three defence sprays, balaclavas, gloves, face masks and duct tape.

“Thanks to our rapid intervention, we managed to save the victim from being held against his will,” a spokesperson said.

Local reports revealed the assailants had information that only the woman and her ex-partner would have known. He told police that she contacted him on the day of the break-in, asking him to come over from the gym to help with a problem on her phone. Police believe this message may have lured him directly to the property.

The investigation took a twist when the woman was taken into custody last weekend. Officers say they now have evidence suggesting she may have orchestrated the botched attack. According to police sources, she had been saddled with debt and may have seen her wealthy ex-lover as the solution to her financial problems.

Local reports also claim her ex-husband offered the alleged Portuguese accomplice around £2,150 to help “give someone a fright”.

All three remain in custody while the investigation continues.
