ARCHIVED - Just under 16,000 new cases at the weekend as Covid infection rates continue to fall in Spain
Madrid is the only region where the situation is still classified as being of extreme risk
The latest coronavirus update issued by Spain’s Ministry of Health on Monday reports a further 15,978 new confirmed cases of the virus over the weekend as the third wave of infection continues to subside, with the accumulated 14-day incidence rate across the country falling to 176 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Among the 17 regions of the country only Madrid is still reporting a rate above the 250 threshold which marks “extreme risk” of contagion (although the same is also true of the two Autonomous Cities of Ceuta and Melilla on the north African coast), while the figure has dropped below 100 in Extremadura (56), the Balearics (81), La Rioja (82) and the Region of Murcia (98). Assuming current trends are maintained this week, that list is likely to lengthen during the next few days.
On the other hand, though, no-one should be tempted to believe that the effects of the third wave have dissipated at the same rate as the number of new cases being reported: the infection rate is still very high, and during the weekend a further 467 fatalities took the official Ministry death toll over the last year to 69,609 (although other data sources suggest that the “real” figure is substantially higher, possibly in the region of 90,000).
In addition, the 11,754 Covid patients currently receiving hospital treatment continue to occupy 9.4 per cent of all available beds, a proportion which rises to above 28 per cent in intensive care units (with 2,923 Covid patients currently in ICUs).
It is also worth mentioning that the national average conceals a good deal of variation among the different regions: the hospital bed occupation figures range from 3.7 per cent in Navarra to over 15 per cent in Madrid, while in ICUs the proportion is between 11.7 per cent in Melilla and 43.4 per cent in Madrid.
