ARCHIVED - Guided tours at the Marroquies Bajos archaeological site available this weekend in Jaen
This is an infrequent opportunity to have a look around the historical site on the edge of Jaen city, which isn’t usually open to the public as it is currently being excavated by archaeologists and is subject to a wider-ranging project to prepare it as a tourist attraction.
Guided tours of the Marroquíes Bajos archaeological site in Jaen's Expansión Norte district are on offer this weekend to mark International Day of Monuments and Sites, the city's council has announced.
There will be tours at 10.30 am and 12.30 pm on Saturday 17 April and Sunday 18 April, and those wishing to go along can book by visiting the Tourist Office on Calle Maestra or phoning 953190455.
The guides will be technicians currently working on excavations at the site, which holds remains dating back more than 5,000 years and has brought to light traces of the Chalcolithic, Visigoth, Roman and Moorish periods (tours in Spanish).
Visitors will be able to see remains of homes and storage buildings, graves, hunting elements and day to day items such as ceramics and arrowheads made of silex from the Otíñar area.
18 April is the International Day for Monuments and Sites, a day aiming at raising awareness of the diversity of cultural heritage and its vulnerability established by ICOMOS (the International Council on Monuments and Sites) in 1982. Every year, the council sets a special theme for the events held to honour the date, and this year it is ‘Complex Pasts: Diverse Futures’.
