Great success for the first ever Micasamo Nations Cup
La Manga Club hosted the tennis tournament this weekend, with all participants and observers enjoying themselves immensely
This weekend saw the first ever Micasamo Nations Cup be held on La Manga Club, with teams of tennis players from Belgium and the British Isles competing in the international tournament, and by all accounts it was a great success that bodes well for possible future editions.
After having welcomed the teams and distributed goodies and drinks at the Micasamo welcome desk, the umpire reminded participants of the rules and allocated the courts. The event kicked off on the Saturday morning with the ladies’ teams and the men’s team competing in doubles matches, which were played in two winning sets, a potential third set being a super tiebreak in 10 points.
This first day saw the British Isles team take a large advantage over the Belgians, with the score board at the end of the day showing a 7-2 lead. This first competition day was complicated for the Belgian team as they were suffering from the jet lag.
In celebration or commiseration, as the case may be, the first day’s competition ended with some drinks at the bar and a captain’s lunch attended by both teams!
On Sunday, the mixed doubles competition started, with the final result being a win for the English team 5-4.
The British Isles team is the great and deserved winner of the first Micasamo Nations Cup by 12 points to 6, and the trophy was presented by Natalie Brown from the Micasamo team.
Captain for the Brits, Sallie, said, “What made the event so special was the way the teams brought competitiveness together with respect for their opponents and the joy of playing. It was played in an immense spirit of good gamesmanship.
“The teams were very evenly matched and the majority of the games went to a third set tie break. The final game of the tournament went to 15-13 in the final set. The British Isles won overall but I think the overall winner was Alain from the Belgium team who brought the whole tournament together.”
Organiser Alain said, “We had an incredible, funny, competitive but friendly weekend. All the feedback I got from the players and the spectators were unanimous! They enjoyed their weekend.
“We had some great and fierce games, some above 2 hours’ play, lots of very close scores but always in a spirit of conviviality and fair play.
“I want to thank our sponsors Micasamo, Trattoria Via Romana and the Owners club as well as the General community for its support. They helped us to make it a great event!”
The next edition of the Micasamo Nations Cup will be at the end of October, with more details to come at a later date.
