ARCHIVED - Grape thieves arrested after rural thefts in and around Totana
Over a ton of grapes were recovered and returned to their rightful owner
Three young people have been detained by the rural crime squad of the Guardia Civil in connection with a series of thefts of grapes in the south-west of the Region of Murcia, following an investigation which began last September.
It is in the late summer that the grape-picking season begins, and last year it coincided with a rash of reports from growers that part of their crops was being removed from vineyards in and around Totana. Guardia patrols and vigilance in the area were intensified and during one of them the suspicion of officers was aroused by a car which was parked, half obscured from view, in an isolated area of vineyards.
Inside were a large number of plastic bags and tools of the kind which are used in cutting bunches of grapes from vines, and when officers inspected the vines in the area they found more bags of exactly the same kind full of grapes. As a result 1,166 kilos of fruit were confiscated and returned to their rightful owner, and when the 21-year-old driver of the car returned to the vehicle he was placed under arrest.
But the officers were convinced that to steal such a large quantity of grapes more than one person must have been involved, and investigations continued until two of the suspect’s companions, one of them under the age of 18, were also identified and detained. It has since been established that the three of them were entering vineyards at night, equipped with torches and wearing dark clothing, and spending hours picking grapes before carrying them back to the car. On occasion they cut so many bunches that the bags did not fit into the car, and in these cases they later returned to the scene of the theft to pick up the remainder before dawn.
The matter is now in the hands of the courts of Totana and the Court for Minors in Murcia.
