Giant Christmas tree returns to Murcia after two-year hiatus

Nothing says Christmas like a star-topped tree illuminated with glittering lights but for the past two years the Plaza Circular in Murcia city has had to go without its festive centrepiece because of contracting issues. Not so this year, as the city council is determined to raise the giant Christmas tree once again in December 2023.

Last year, a problem arose with the decoration company, whose contract didn’t include setting up the tree and to avoid similar difficulties, the Murcia City Council has already put the project out to tender and interested parties will have until October 9 to place their bids.

And in 2021, the authorities initially claimed they wouldn’t erect the tree to avoid crowds gathering at the height of the coronavirus pandemic but in reality, there was another mistake with the contracts and no-one showed up to install it.

The contract, valued at 1.4 million euros and lasting two years, will cover everything from designing and assembling the huge metal structure to the installation of lighting and sound equipment and other elements that complete the Christmas stage in the Plaza.

The decision not to install the iconic tree did not sit well with many residents of the capital who blamed the ineptness of the ruling socialist government. In an unforgettable moment, at the end of November 2022, Murcia woke up to streets covered in flyers accusing the PSOE of “denying Christmas to thousands of families in the Region of Murcia.”
