ARCHIVED - Five deaths, active cases over 9,000 in Murcia Region; Coronavirus update Monday 19th October
Covid hospitalisations reach record level in the Murcia Region
The number of hospitalisations and deaths continue to increase in the Murcia Region, figures which cause greater concern for the regional health service than even the continually rising number of active cases.
The majority of cases diagnosed continue to exhibit mild symptoms or are asymptomatic, although obviously these individuals are able to transmit the virus to other people who perhaps may be more susceptible and suffer severe symptoms, so the regional authorities continue to impose measures where deemed appropriate to try and reduce transmission wherever possible. On Tuesday Lorca and Jumilla will leave phase one restrictions although Totana, Fortuna and Abanilla will continue to face restrictions for a further week.
At lunchtime on Monday 19th October, the Murcia Region has 9,100 active cases, its highest ever level and has recorded 28,854 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.
Currently there are no region-wide restrictions to prevent the further spread of the virus due to worries about the economic impact of lockdowns, and the public has become accustomed to living with semi-restrictions and wearing masks. The semi-restrictions are achieving some success at reducing the number of contagions within local municipalities, but the transmission of the virus is now generalised, and for some inconceivable reason, given the fact that the real number of deaths in Spain is well over 50,000 and many people are being left with what is now being called “long covid” afterwards, many members of the public are relaxing their guard and acting as though covid is no longer a dangerous virus which is now widespread throughout the population, although it has never been as dangerous as it is currently due to the large number of active cases and the arrival of the winter flu and colds season. The combination of flu and covid is extremely dangerous for the elderly and the infirm and anyone entitled to a free flu vaccine is being urged by the regional government to accept the vaccination this year and give themselves some degree of protection.
During the last week, the number of cases increased by 23%. Some of this could be put down to an increase in the level of PCR tests, but these only increased by 11.5% last week, so we are left with a “real increase” of 12.82% in cases as can clearly be seen by the graphic below.
The figures published on Monday relate to Sunday, and Monday figures are always slightly different to the remainder of the week as there is less testing on a Sunday, so as is normal, the number of new cases is lower than in previous days, at “only” 319 new cases.
To put this in context, just think back to the days when we were completely locked down and going out to the supermarket was something of a military operation; just one person, guards at the entrance to the supermarket making sure we were wearing gloves and masks, disinfecting carparks, wiping down everything with bleach and anxious in case we inadvertently touched another person whilst shopping; for that entire period we had less cases in total than were reported just on this one day.
Graphic: Hospìtalisations; blue covid admissions, red intensive care
Most of the 9100 active cases we now have are in domestic isolation, that’s 8,707 positive patients at home, but this leaves 393 hospitalised, 77 of them in intensive care. 393 hospitalisations with covid is the highest figure yet recorded in the region since the start of the pandemic, and the 77 in intensive care just one bed short of the record level of 78, so the stress of the situation in the region’s hospitals is starting to show, although the region does have capacity for further patients.
Graphic: Fatalities since end of state of emergency
The number of deaths continues to increase and in the last 24 hours a further five fatalities have been reported, bringing the total in the region to 265.
Four males and one female, aged 81, 52, 95, 76 and 84 from Alcantarilla, Murcia, Totana Torre Pacheco and Cartagena are the latest casualties.
