Firefighters extinguish blaze in the Murcia countryside this weekend

Helicopters helped to put out the forest fire in central Murcia yesterday afternoon

This Sunday afternoon, firefighters in Murcia capital were called out to extinguish a wildfire between San José de la Montaña and El Garruchal.

At 4.40pm, at least 86 calls calls were received at the Emergency Coordination Centre alerting fire crews of a forest fire that left a huge column of smoke rising into the air.

The forest area where the fire happened is located just to the southeast of Murcia city, in the vicinity of Santo Ángel, El Valle Golf Resort and Gea y Truyols.

Firefighting helicopters and ground crews were on the scene to put out the fire, which burnt up a stretch of forest around 70 metres long.

By just after 6pm, the fire was declared to have been “stabilised” and by 6.30pm it was classified as “under control”. The helicopters were told to stand down.

Initial estimates point to around 11,000 square metres of land being scorched in the fire.

An environmental agent and a forestry brigade remained in the area overnight to ensure that no further hotspots flared up again.

So far, there is no indication as to why or how the fire started.
