ARCHIVED - February 3-5 Tour of Guadalentin-Murcia Region cycle race
A stage of La Vuelta Ciclista al Guadalentín – Región de Murcia will start in Mazarrón for the first time
Mazarrón is bracing itself for a sporting first next week having been selected by the Murcia Region's Cycling Federation to host a start in the 6th Tour of Guadalentín-Murcia Region cycle race, the first national stage competition in the Elite and U23 calendar.
The race will be completed in three stages. The first will run entirely in the Campo de Cartagena, starting and finishing at the Salazones Ricardo Fuentes e Hijos facilities.
Competing cyclists will then head towards the Mar Menor, and from Los Nietos, the key section of the race will begin. The passes of Alto de las Cenizas and Cola del Caballo de Portmán, both 3rd category, will be critical points in the race and prelude challenging kilometres in the fight to lose as little time as possible.
The second day of the Region of Murcia Vuelta Ciclista al Guadalentín will start in Mazarrón, which is hosting part of the race for the first time, in a stage that promises to be harder than it may seem on paper.
At kilometre 25 cyclists will be met by the Alto del Lomo de Bas - 2nd category Cima Julián Hernández Zaragoza. This presents athletes with the possibility of climbing the podium in the early stages of the race, so a big fight for this prize is expected.
From there, the race will cross the municipality of Águilas on the way to the Alto del Carril, 3rd category, entering the Guadalentín Valley and the Puerto Lumbreras circuits. The finish line will be on the N-340, next to the Puerto Lumbreras Town Hall.
The third day will start at the Plaza de Calderón in Lorca, a stage of the race that will take place in the districts of the Tierras Altas, the scene of the second stage of 2022 and venue for a host of cycling events and competitions.
The descent towards Lorca will take place along the La Parroquia road in the direction of Lorca Castle.
During a presentation of the race route and timetables on Wednesday, January 25, Mazarrón's Sports Councillor, Francisco José García, thanked the Regional Cycle Federation for its commitment to sport and said "Mazarrón is proud to play a part in the Vuelta Ciclista al Guadalentín for the first time".
