ARCHIVED - Decision of Galician parliament to fine for refusing a vaccine under discussion
The Spanish Epidemiology Society says that it sees no justification in the legislation
Last week the Galician parliament became the first in Spain to pass legislation changing regulations in order to enable their regional government to issue fines to individuals who refuse to have a coronavirus vaccination without just cause, sparking off debate about the need to legislate against those unwilling/unable to take the Covid vaccine.
Although some bodies support the stance, the majority support the position adopted by the Spanish government which maintains that vaccination should be optional and on Monday the Spanish Epidemiology Society (SEE) joined the argument, saying that it currently sees no reason to make the Covid vaccination compulsory.
“Although Spanish legislation does allow the authorities to impose compulsory vaccination under certain circumstances, it is less clear whether or not a region can do so unilaterally and across an entire region, especially one where the situation is better than in other places,” the SEE stated.
"At present, there are no epidemiological or ethical reasons to justify compulsory vaccination. Quite the contrary," the society concluded.
At the moment the European Commission is examining the whole question of issuing Covid passports for travel, and although the Spanish government is also keen to see a system implemented, at the moment there is no indication of whether an individual who refuses a vaccination on ethical grounds will also be refused entry to another country because of their ethical stance and whether there will be cross-exchange of data between the Spanish health Authorities and the EU.
