ARCHIVED - Death of a Toledo teacher given AstraZeneca vaccine to be investigated
Toledo University Hospital informed the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products on Friday that a patient was in intensive care with a suspected adverse reaction to the coronavirus vaccine.
A 30-year-old teacher who was given the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid has died in Toledo.
The patient was admitted on Friday to intensive care at the city's Virgen de la Salud hospital with severe blood clots, suspected to be related to the vaccine, and died on Monday.
The hospital has informed the Ministry of Health, and there will be investigations to determine whether the vaccine could have caused the blood clots that lead to his death.
The Spanish health authorities reviewed their strategy last week when the European Medicines Agency (EMA) admitted that several countries had reported rare cases of blood clots in patients who had received the vaccine by AstraZeneca.
Whereas at first, Spain only authorised the vaccine for patients under the age of 55, now it is only to be given to those aged between 60 and 69, causing confusion and sparking criticism from many quarters.
Despite concerns over the safety of the vaccine for younger age groups, various regions are applying for permission to allow the under-60s to receive it voluntarily.
The authorities, meanwhile, are quick to stress that cases of adverse reactions are extremely rare.
The fourth ‘Pharmacovigilance report on Covid-19 vaccines’, released last week by the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (Aemps), stated that just 0.18 per cent of recipients of the vaccine reported adverse effects, mainly fevers, headaches and sore muscles.
The report also stressed that the fact that the side effects are reported doesn’t necessarily mean they are caused by the vaccine, as they could be a coincidence.
