ARCHIVED - Covid terrace permissions in Murcia at risk of being revoked
Bars and restaurants in Murcia city were given permission to extend their terraces into public spaces during the pandemic
The city council in Murcia is due to start reviewing the terrace extensions given to bars and restaurants during the pandemic to allow them to place tables in areas which fall under public domain, such as pavements, squares and parking lots.
In total, there are 490 of these temporary terraces installed in public areas, of which 20% are occupying parking spaces and these are the most at risk of having their extensions revokes, along with terraces that are blocking public footpaths.
However, business owners in the sector have called on the local council to maintain the so-called ‘Covid terraces’ until all restrictions for the interiors of bars, pubs and restaurants are removed, so that the hospitality sector can continue to offer as many tables as possible to customers.
According to the current restrictions, there must be at least a metre and a half between indoor tables, meaning that bars and restaurants are still unable to operate at full occupancy.
The nightlife sector is also subject to indoor restrictions, but this could change if the use of Covid certificates is approved by the High Court in the Region of Murcia. These certificates would allow nightclubs and late-night bars to operate at 100% capacity both indoors and out.
According to the Murcia city council, the authorities will take under consideration the hospitality sector’s concerns about the removal of Covid terraces and will schedule a new meeting at the end of November to study the situation.
