ARCHIVED - Covid incidence rate in Spain tops 200 for the first time since February
131 more fatalities as the fourth wave of infection continues to put pressure on health services
As had been widely forecast, the number of new coronavirus cases being confirmed in Spain is showing a steady upward trend following the increased travel and socializing over the Easter holidays, and the latest bulletin published on Wednesday evening by the Ministry of Health reports a rise of 4 points in the 14-day incidence rate to over 200, the first time that threshold has been crossed since 25th February.
While the rate has climbed to 200.98, the Ministry reports another 131 Covid-related fatalities in the previous 24 hours, taking the official death toll since the start of the pandemic to 76,756.
In spite of the latest increases only three of the country’s 17 regions are reporting rates above the “extreme risk” threshold of 250, namely Navarra (434), the Basque Country (346) and Madrid (347), but the figures are also over 200 in another 5 (Aragón, Andalucía, Catalunya, La Rioja and Castilla y León). At the other end of the scale, the Comunidad Valenciana (34.9) continues to occupy the “low risk” zone but the only other regions to report figures of under 100 are Galicia (77), Murcia (66) and the Balearics (59).

Meanwhile, the proportion of hospital beds occupied by Covid patients dropped slightly in the latest update to 7.84 per cent, but the equivalent figure in intensive care units remains dangerously high at 21.6 per cent, and is between 37 and 42 per cent in La Rioja, Catalunya and Madrid.
Meanwhile, the vaccine campaign continues apace; as of April 14 a total of 11,436,073 doses had been administered in Spain with 3,185,186 people having received two doses.
