Corvera Airport will have a new international destination for summer 2024
The regional president, Fernando López Miras, has announced that the Murcia airport will have a new international next year
The Region of Murcia International Airport will expand its number of flight destinations next summer with a new route that will connect Murcia with the city of Porto in northern Portugal. This was announced by the regional president, Fernando López Miras, in an interview for Cadena Ser on the occasion of World Tourism Day.
Murcia’s President highlighted the importance of infrastructure and “having good connections” so that tourists “find it easy to get to the Region”.
As such, he has praised the fact that Corvera airport “is advancing” and that flight connections have already been announced with Madrid and Barcelona, which join the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Morocco and other parts of Spain as destinations accessible from Murcia.
At the moment, more details about the Murcia-Porto connection are unknown. The only information to come out is what President Miras said, that it will start next summer.
López Miras also took the opportunity to lament the number of AVE connections in Murcia, which currently only has four high-speed trains per day connecting it with Madrid, a journey that takes three and a half hours. This is in contrast to neighbouring Alicante, which has 14 trains which take just two hours.
Despite this, he has defended the good showing of the tourist sector so far this year, with one million visitors and three million overnight stays between January and August, the best figures in Murcia’s history.
In addition, tourism has generated 45,000 jobs in Murcia this year, 5% more than in the same period of 2022. This makes the Region of Murcia the autonomous community in Spain with the fourth largest growth rate and best tourism figures, behind the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community and Andalucía.
The figures are impressive considering the less-than-ideal passenger numbers coming through Corvera airport this August, which were actually fewer than in 2022.
In addition to improving infrastructure, to continue advancing the Region’s tourism, López Miras has pointed out the need to expand and improve the number of hotel beds available in Murcia, as well as boosting sustainability to make the development of the tourism sector compatible with environmental protection.
Flights to Madrid and Barcelona starting in November
In mid-May, the regional president already announced that Corvera airport would have direct flights with Madrid and Barcelona starting in November.
The idea is that, starting in November, the Region of Murcia International Airport will have two round-trip connections a week with both cities.
Flight destinations from the Region of Murcia International Airport
Murcia’s Corvera Airport currently has a total of 20 destinations operated by eight different companies, including UK airports Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, East Midlands, Glasgow, Manchester and three London airports – Gatwick, Luton and Stansted.
You can also fly to Ireland (Dublin), Belgium (Antwerp and Osten Bruges), Morocco (Casablanca and Oujda-Les Angades) and the Czech Republic (Prague).
As for domestic connections within Spain, you can travel to Oviedo, Gran Canaria, Menorca, Palma de Mallorca and Santander.
These cities will soon be joined by Madrid and Barcelona and, next summer, Porto.
The autumn/winter low season at Corvera airport, when the number of flight destinations is reduced in comparison with the summer flight schedule, begins in late October.
