ARCHIVED - Ceramic mural unveiled in Cartagena to commemorate victims of gender violence
Flowers as a symbol of the beauty and strength of women
To coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women this week a new mural made of ceramics was unveiled in Cartagena under the title of “Mujeres que hablan con flores” (Women who speak with flowers).
The mural was created by those taking part in a workshop held by the council Department of Equality and uses the flower as a symbol of feminine strength and beauty. It can be seen on the wall of the municipal athletics stadium and is intended as a commemoration of all victims of gender violence in Spain – over a thousand women have been murdered by their partners or former partners since 2003, a statistic underlined by councillor David Martínez at the unveiling ceremony on Thursday.
