ARCHIVED - Catalonia prepares for Covid positives at the polls and starts to vaccinate police force
The region’s Health Secretary has promised that teachers will be considered to be essential workers and will receive their vaccinations over the next three months
As Catalonia prepares for its regional elections on Sunday the 14th of February, General Public
Health Secretary Josep Maria Argimon announced during an interview with Catalunya Ràdio on
Tuesday that his department intends to include teachers in its list of essential workers who will
be starting to receive their first doses against Covid this week. “We’re not going to leave
teachers out, they are included in the essential workers group together with emergency
services staff and chemists, but we won’t be able to vaccinate everyone in a single day. We
expect to have the group covered within the next three months,” the General Public Health
Secretary said.
His announcement came after Alba Vergès, the minister for Health in the Catalan government, announced on Monday that the intention in the region is for doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to be administered “immediately” to health sector workers such as chemists and physiotherapists as well as the forces of law and order and emergency staff.
The regional government of Catalunya has decided to extend this phase of the vaccination campaign to include others who by the nature of their work are in constant contact with members of the public, including officers of the Mossos d’Esquadra (the regional police force of Catalunya), firefighters and prison officers. These groups are considered to form part of the “essential services” by the Spanish government but as of Monday no orders had been given for the Policía Nacional and the Guardia Civil to be prioritized.
By Tuesday the Spanish government had announced a modification in the prioritization of groups of the population to receive the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, moving officers of the police forces and the Guardia Civil, emergency services staff, schoolteachers and firefighters up to the top of the list.
By Wednesday the Catalan regional health authority had already begun its vaccination of the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Policía Local in Lleida.
Within the next few days work will begin to vaccinate regional firefighters and Protección Civil.
Covid positives expected at polling stations on Sunday
However, before the programme can begin in earnest, there is the small matter of regional elections to deal with first and Argimon also reported during the interview that around 14,000 people with coronavirus may attend the polling stations on Sunday, together with an estimated 70,000 people who have been in close contact to someone with the virus. “It would be better for them to stay at home,
but they do have a right to vote,” he admitted.
The pandemic has already had an effect on the elections, as more than 25,000 people called to
staff polling stations have asked to be pardoned. However, the authorities have stated that
they will still be able to open 99% of the region’s 9,139 polling stations.
