Cartagena steps up cleaning of its ramblas to prevent flooding

The City Council of Cartagena is continuing its campaign to clean and clear the ‘rambla’ waterways in order to minimise the effects of the autumn rains. By clearing the sticks, stones, weeds and waste from these watercourses, the rain water should be able to run off safely rather than overflow and end up flooding the local area.

Council workers have recently cleaned up sections of the watercourse that runs through the town of Vista Alegre, next to the Renfe train line that connects Cartagena with Los Nietos.

The municipal workers have also carried out tree pruning work on Avenida Sebastián Feringán, near Tentegorra, at the height of the Rambla shopping centre.

The work to clean up ramblas is a yearly job that municipalities across Spain have to undertake every year in order to prevent flooding. In Cartagena, this work has intensified in recent months, in anticipation of the torrential episodes that occur at this time of year. Work has been carried out in areas such as the Trujillo rambla in El Algar, the Charco de Escombreras and the Benipila in Cartagena.

At the same time, the municipal drinking water supply service concessionaire, Hidrogea, has been working more intensively since summer on the maintenance and upkeep of the entire drainage system in Cartagena, cleaning more than 6,000 drains.
