Cartagena invests €121,000 in its beaches ahead of the summer
The new maintenance and upkeep service will focus on Cabo de Palos and La Manga

Cartagena City Council is set to roll out a new seasonal maintenance service for the public beaches in Cabo de Palos and La Manga del Mar Menor, aimed at ensuring tip-top conditions ahead of the summer season. The initiative comes with a budget of €121,000 and will run through December 31 of this year.
The project, coordinated by the Coastal Department under Councillor Gonzalo López Pretel, will operate on an on-demand basis, adapting to seasonal needs and prioritising readiness ahead of the Easter holidays and summer tourist rush.
The maintenance work will focus on the beaches, promenades and surrounding areas of Calafría, Cala Reona and Playa Levante in Cabo de Palos, as well as several locations in La Manga such as Cala del Pino, Cavanna, Puerto Bello and El Vivero.
The work will cover a wide range of services including the maintenance of street furniture such as benches, waste bins, signs and railings, as well as the preservation of award-winning paths and trails. The plan also includes decorative painting, beach cleanups, the installation and removal of seasonal furniture and immediate interventions in the event of emergencies such as storms or pollution spills.
Other specific tasks will involve the collection of dead marine animals, the upkeep of floating walkways and in-water structures and the preparation of designated beaches for official inspections or scheduled events.
In addition to the general maintenance plan, the City Council will also install four new lifeguard towers on Cartagena’s municipal beaches this summer. This part of the project is supported by €54,000 in European funding and the new towers will be installed on the beaches of San Ginés, Levante and Amoladeras, as part of the city’s 'Sports Beaches Plan'.
These towers are designed to improve the visibility and response capability of lifeguard teams in areas that experience high numbers of swimmers during the peak months.
